Detailed Introduction to Komatsu PC240LC-8 (Komatsu 240-8) Crawler Excavator

The Komatsu PC240LC-8 (commonly referred to as Komatsu 240-8) is a class-leading 24-ton medium-sized crawler excavator developed and manufactured by Komatsu Ltd., the world-renowned Japanese construction equipment manufacturer. Launched as part of Komatsu’s -8 series product line to replace the older PC240-7 model, it is designed to balance high operation efficiency, low fuel consumption, exceptional reliability and operator comfort, making it one of the most popular models in its class globally. It complies with EPA Tier 3 / EU Stage IIIA emission standards, and is widely used in construction, mining, municipal, forestry and water conservancy scenarios.

2. Key Performance Features

2.1 Industry-Leading Fuel Efficiency

Matched with Komatsu’s proprietary CLSS (Closed-center Load Sensing System) and HydrauMind electro-hydraulic control technology, the PC240LC-8 optimizes hydraulic pump flow distribution according to real-time operation demand, reducing unnecessary hydraulic loss by over 12% compared to the previous -7 series. It is equipped with 3 optional work modes:

Power (P) Mode: For heavy-load, high-efficiency operation scenarios such as hard rock digging
Economy (E) Mode: For light and medium load scenarios, reducing fuel consumption by up to 10% without obvious efficiency loss
Attachment (A) Mode: Optimized flow output for auxiliary attachments such as breakers, grapples and shears.

2.2 Ultra-High Structural Reliability

The boom, arm and main frame adopt high-tensile steel welding structure, with reinforced rib plates added at key stress points to resist impact and deformation in heavy load conditions. The track frame uses a box-type welding structure, and all supporting rollers, idlers and carrier rollers are equipped with sealed lubrication systems, extending their service life by 30% under harsh working conditions. The large-diameter roller slewing bearing has strong load-bearing capacity, and the standard wear-resistant steel bucket has a 20% longer service life than ordinary buckets of the same level.

2.3 Precise and Smooth Operation

The hydraulic system has fast response speed and excellent micro-control performance, which can realize stable and coordinated compound actions (such as simultaneous boom lifting, swinging and arm retracting) without lag or jitter, greatly improving operation efficiency, especially suitable for fine work such as land leveling, foundation trimming and hoisting operations.

3. Operator Comfort & Safety

The cab is ROPS (Roll-over Protective Structure) and FOPS (Falling Object Protective Structure) certified, which fully guarantees the personal safety of the operator in case of accidents.
The cab is mounted on silicone oil shock absorbers, reducing vibration transmission by 40% compared with ordinary shock absorbers, and the internal operating noise is only 72 dB(A), reaching the noise level of passenger cars.
The high-back air suspension seat supports 8-way adjustment, with adjustable armrests and lumbar support, adapting to operators of different heights and body types, and reducing fatigue during long-hour operation.
The ergonomically designed control lever has low operating force, and the large LCD monitor displays real-time parameters such as fuel consumption, water temperature, hydraulic oil temperature and fault codes in real time, which is convenient for operators to grasp the equipment status.
Standard high-efficiency air conditioning system with multiple air outlets, large-area tempered glass windows, and optional reversing camera, ensuring a wide field of view under all weather conditions.

4. Maintenance & Total Cost Optimization

All daily maintenance points including filter elements, oil filling ports and drain ports are arranged at ground-accessible positions, eliminating the need for climbing during routine maintenance and greatly improving maintenance efficiency.
Long service life of wearing parts: The two-stage air filter is suitable for high-dust working conditions, with a replacement cycle of 500 hours; the hydraulic oil replacement cycle is as long as 5,000 hours, which greatly reduces the maintenance frequency and cost.
Equipped with Komatsu’s exclusive KOMTRAX remote monitoring system, which supports real-time viewing of equipment location, operating hours, fuel consumption and fault warnings through mobile phones or computers, making it convenient for fleet management and reducing unplanned downtime.
Komatsu has a global after-sales service network, with sufficient spare parts supply, and the PC240LC-8 has a very high residual value in the second-hand equipment market, with a 10-15% higher resale price than similar models of other brands, reducing the total life cycle cost.

5. Typical Applications

The Komatsu PC240LC-8 is suitable for a wide range of operation scenarios:

Civil construction: Foundation digging, site leveling, small-scale house demolition
Transportation infrastructure construction: Subgrade excavation, slope trimming for highways, railways and airports
Quarry and mining: Overburden stripping, ore loading and transportation
Water conservancy projects: River dredging, reservoir construction, pipeline trenching
Forestry and agriculture: Site clearing, tree pit digging, bulk material handling
Municipal works: Urban landscaping, waste transfer, pipeline maintenance
